What we are, and have always been, is a congregation of the Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ),– a denomination forged on the frontier in America’s infancy; a denomination in which the beliefs we share are more important than the things that divide us. While we do not adhere to a creedal statement we do hold certain beliefs in common.
We Believe...
20k12 kicked-off in mid January and is already seeing some early success. We have already passed the 300 mark of contacts (talking with people about The Valley) and we're starting to see some of visitors come to our church for a visit. The heart of 20k12 is talking about our ministry at The Valley and inviting unchurched people to woship with us.
With the blessing of the MCC Board of Directors a team has been formed to develop a plan that will lead The Valley campus of Middletown Christian Church to self-sustainability. 2012 will require a greater level of financial commitment from MCC to keep the Valley Campus moving forward, however the board realizes that carrying forward that level of support in the years to come it not healthy for either campus. “To become an effective ministry in Southwest Louisville The Valley must become self-sustaining,” said Valley Campus Pastor Ed Huckleberry.
The team working to develop a sustainability strategy is headed by former MCC Board Chair Steve Harrison. The Valley Sustainability Team was formed in late 2011 and had its first meeting in January. The team includes the senior ministers from the Middletown and Valley Station campuses and members Dan Forbis, Jennifer Fahey, Ned Harris, Gary Nash, KJ Powell, David Gresham, and Harrison as Team Leader.
Harrison says, “The team’s primary objective is to eliminate the existing mortgage debt and achieve future member growth, thereby reducing The Valley’s reliance on MCC funding. . The team meets bi-weekly and has been focused on identifying ideas to achieve the objectives and be self-sustaining by year end. The initial funding plan in 2008 called for MCC funding to cease at the end of 2012. All options are being considered and costs and programs scrutinized for potential opportunities. The team plans to make its recommendations to Board of Directors in May.” The team has a major task in front of it, but all members are committed to the same goal, the long and short term sustainability of MCC’s Valley Campus.
Ed says, “All of this will translate into more change for The Valley. Change seems to be the only constant on the campus since it was restarted in March 2009. While change is good, change can also be stressful. Please keep The Valley’s leaders and people, along with the Sustainability Team, in your prayers.”
This will be a year of transition for The Valley as it moves toward full self-sustainability. An informal congregational meeting will be held following worship on Sunday January 15th to outline plans our 20K12 campaiagn, for our transition to future ministry, and to answer questions the work of The Valley's Sustainability Team.
20K12 Kicks-Off January 1
An extraordinary effort begins on January 1st at The Valley. In the coming year we have a goal of 20,000 face to face encounters with people in our community to let people know who we are and what we're about. A second part of 20K12 is that we will be asking worshippers at The Valley to make a pledge for the number of people they will invite to worship with them during the year. Our hope is to exceed our goal of 500 invited guests at worship. It's an aggressive campaign to take our ministry into new places in the Valley Station and Pleasure Ridge Park communities.
Academy of Preachers Speaker at The Valley
Our Middletown campus is home church of a great ministry known as the Academy of Young Preachers. This ministry invites young people between 14 and 28 to hone their preaching skills. More than 100 young preachers will be in Louisville the first week of January for an annual workshop and one of those young preachers will be speaking at The Valley on January 1st, New Years Day. T.J. Pancake from Ohio will be with us in worhsip and preach on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7. Be sure to join us for this special event to kick off the new year.
